Our Programs

Action Asia works predominantly in Myanmar and Nepal towards democracy and a stable peace in conjunction with local practitioners belonging to the network.. This sometimes means that we are unable to make public all our work as this could possibly put those involved at risk. The programs below represent some of the projects that we are currently engaged in. For further information on any aspect of our work, please contact our office.

Asian Peacebuilders Forum

Action Asia organises opportunities for peacebuilders around the continent to come together, share their experiences and work together for peace.

Much of the training and materials relating to conflict transformation and peace building has been generated and provided in Western countries. Organisations such as Responding to Conflict in the UK, and Eastern Mennonite University in the United States have led the field in equipping peace practitioners to do their work.

Nepal Solidarity Visit

This coming May, Action Asia again hopes to take a delegation of members to visit active peacebuilders in Nepal. The situation in recent months has been turbulent and chaotic.

It is therefore important that like-minded peace advocates can come together and critically assess the situation, look at possible future scenarios, and identify strategic goals and interventions.

This dialogue aims to listen to people’s expectations, their own analysis of the situation, and how they see positive change can take place in Nepal.

The dialogue hopes to encompass following themes:

bullet
Critical analysis of the situation looking at various and differing perspectives of parties and stakeholders in conflict; identifying key parties in conflict and the power relations
bullet
Assessment of actions undertaken, the kinds of effective and ineffective interventions within and without the country
bullet
Identifying common goal and common “enemy”; building alliance/network and solidarity, and to look at strengths and weaknesses of the group
bullet
Strategic campaign plans
bullet
Action Asia expects the visit to assist the development of peace and stability in the region by achieving:
bullet
Thorough analysis and clear understanding of the recent situation in Nepal
bullet
Deeper comprehension of effective actions for intervention
bullet
Network solidarity between individuals and organizations within Nepal and Action Asia
bullet
Identified shared vision and collective values of the group
bullet
Identified strategic actions that the group may undertake
bullet
Documented Report of the Dialogue and other Meetings

The visit will be conducted by three Action Asia members over a period of five days with a report to be finalized and circulated by the Action Asia Secretariat.

Applied Conflict Transformation Studies

Action Asia is a partner in the Applied Conflict Transformation Studies (Asia) course run by the Alliance for Conflict Transformation and Pannasastra University Phnom Penh.

The course is a two year accredited Masters program, offering residential seminars every three months along with action research assignments focused on the practitioners' regular work. The course is offered in Cambodia for the Asia region, but also runs in the Balkans and Africa.

The course focuses on conflict-transformation and aims to bridge the gap between academic research and the wealth of experience that exists on the ground. ACTS is rooted in the work and experiences of its participants, developing participants practical skills and creating new theory from their own experience.
